Gilgamesh Timeline
"No, this has not been an easy journey. I have crossed blade with strange opponents more time than I can count!"
-- Gilgamesh about his journey, Dissidia 012: Final Fantasy
Final Fantasy V (origin)
It is in this world that Gilgamesh made his debuts! Born in a village where all men were warriors, Gilgamesh proved to be one if not the the strongest warrior in his hometown and thus earned the legendary Genji Set that would soon become his trademark armor. The Genji Set was said to be nigh-invulnerable. It is unknown how he came to work for Exdeath, but in spite of being the right hand man of this crazed tree-man, Gilgamesh himself was not that of a bad guy.
What drove him? The never-ending thirst of his soul for battle! Nevermind that he lost all of his battles against the heroes, Bartz & co… And that he overall did very badly at his job for Exdeath. He remained an excellent warrior however, decimating all by himself an entire army. It's just a shame that his exploits are only mentioned and happen off-screen. One could wonder if he doesn't make them up to build his legend… Probably not.
However as he picked Excalipoor and attacked Bartz and his companions with it, Exdeath banished Gilgamesh to the Interdimensional Rift, out of disdain for his repeated failures. And that is how Gilgamesh came to travel across the Final Fantasy Multiverse.
Weapons:
- Excalipoor (lost)
- Naginata
- Trident (lost)
- Missiles
Dissidia 012: Final Fantasy
Following his arrival to the Rift and after fighting many monsters, the War of Dissidia began. Cosmos and Chaos summoned many warriors from the worlds that fell into discord to fight for them—However Gilgamesh wasn't affected by the war, as a resident of the rift. Instead he randomly arrived in the World of Dissidia as he journeyed the Rift, still driven by his desire to return home and fight Bartz.
In this world made of remnants, memories and crystals, Gilgamesh found many legendary weapons! Unfortunately, none of them were real and he never realized it. What a strange world this was- He met with Squall, Vaan and Zidane, whom he was meant to meet in his future, yet none recognized him. When he finally met Bartz in this world, the boy acted strangely but they fought one on one at long last! Upon being defeated Gilgamesh was about to display his true power when the rift sucked him back him. Before disappearing, he swore he'd meet Bartz again.
I have chosen this placement for Dissidia as Gilgamesh mention the last time Bartz saw him was when he had been sucked in the rift. As such it is the only good placement. Furthermore unlike other characters it is possible he kept his Dissidia memories (as he is not a part of the war and he is shown to have kept the fake weapons he acquired here by FFXIII-2).
Weapons (all crystal fakes):
- Guns
- Excalibur (Limit Break)
- Excalipoor
- Masamune
- Zantetsuken
- Genji Blade
- Naginata
- Chicken Knife
- Battle Axe
Interdimensional Rift
As the Dissidia War continued, Gilgamesh had to fight the countless manikins that infested the Rift. The end of the war did not mean he was allowed to rest, as countless monsters populated this place. Would he ever see the light of the day once again?
Final Fantasy IV: The After Years
Gilgamesh had no clue what happened here. As he was fighting monsters in the Rift, the Creator of the New Moon summoned him to fight the heroes of this universe. Confused, he mistook them for monsters and fought them. He was promptly ass kicked and sent back to the rift just as he realized they were, in fact, not monsters.
I have chosen this placement because it is the only one making sense. He mistakes the party for monsters like he is about to do with Bartz and his friends-- Meaning he has not reunited with the FFV Party yet. Furthermore here he was summoned by the creator, he did not travel through the rift. It means he was not freed from the Rift by Seifer just yet.
Weapons:
- Zantetsuken
- Excalipoor
- Naginata
Final Fantasy V (return)
He kept fighting in the Rift. And then on a fated day, he met with Bartz and his companions! He mistook them for monsters at first but quickly realized who they were and confessed how terribly sad he was. Now his only wish was to go home. He ceased the fight and acted much more friendly than ever toward them. They tried to explain him how to go home and he promptly left, not before saying he'd like to go on an adventure with them. Maybe they could become friend?
Of course, he couldn't leave them alone in this place to fight Exdeath. As they fought Necrophobe, Gilgamesh came back and assisted them. Finally, he sacrificed himself by doing a suicide attack to take Necrophobe out. Placement chosen as it was the next logical step.
Final Fantasy VIII
Gilgamesh did not die! He was badly wounded and momentarily lost the use of his four right arms, but he lived and drifted through the Rift.
A fated day in the world of Final Fantasy VIII, Seifer defeated Odin which sent his legendary blade, Zantetsuken, in the sky. The famous blade was said to be able to cut anything in two. And the legend proved to be true as it did cut the sky open. Little did Seifer know he actually opened the Interdimensional Rift- A being trapped in the Rift then caught the Zantetsuken and saw this opening: Gilgamesh.
Taking on this chance to put his exile at an end, Gilgamesh fled from the Rift and this is how his journey began, not without helping Squall as a Guardian Force, defeating Seifer as a start. This placement was chosen for many reasons: It is the moment Gilgamesh got freed from the Rift, so this one has to happen before any other of his appearances (Dissidia, FFV and FFIV aside). From there on he can go on to appear in many more worlds. Furthermore four of his arms are missing, hinting at him still being wounded from his encounter with Necrophobe.
Weapons:
- Zantetsuken (get)
- Masamune
- Excalibur (summon)
- Excalipoor
Final Fantasy I
His next stop was the FFI world. No one knows how long Gilgamesh drifted through the void of the rift between this and FFVIII. What did he do, what spectacular enemies did he fight? All of this is lost to the legend. What is known though is that somehow, the rift took Gilgamesh to World A, where the Warriors of Light were on a quest to save their world.
Gilgamesh did not waste time in this world, although he did become aware of some common culture elements. As the Warriors of Light stumbled upon what Gilgamesh thought to be Excalibur, he fought them to reclaim his prize! Not only was he wrong and this was only this world's version of Excalipoor, he also got ass kicked back into the Rift by the Warriors of Light. Not a good memory.
Placement chosen as Gilgamesh is fairly rude here, unlike the later games. Furthermore he is looking for Excalibur, which he owns by FFIX, FFXII and XIII-2 (fakes, but he thinks they're the real deal).
Weapons:
- Excalipoor
- Naginata
Final Fantasy VI
It is in the world of Final Fantasy VI that Gilgamesh found the legendary Masamune! Well, a fake... He fished it in some sort of poisoned lake or something... Then some warriors bet the famous Excalipoor, er, Excalibur in a tournament! He defied them and lost pretty badly, even losing some of his best swords such as the real Zantetsuken in the process. He went on to help them as an Esper until time came for him to leave.
Placement chosen as Gilgamesh must have visited this world before Final Fantasy XII and XIII (for Masamune). Furthermore, as he lost the real Zantetsuken by the time of FFXII and XIII-2 and he is still looking for Excalibur here, this can be the only placement.
Weapons:
- Lightbringer
- Ragnarok (throws it away)
- Zantetsuken (real, throws it away)
- Mutsunokami (throws it away)
- Masamune (found)
- Excalipoor
- Naginata
Final Fantasy X
Gilgamesh is stated to have found a copy of Muramasa in the Ruins of Zanarkand! He probably spotted Tidus and his sword Brotherhood at some point and made a copy of it. Placement chosen as Gilgamesh must have visited this world before Final Fantasy XII and XIII.
Weapons:
- Steal Muramasa copy
- Spot Tidus & Brotherhood
Final Fantasy IX
Little does Gilgamesh remembers of his stay in this world! His memories are blur but he remembers being stuck in an intermediary form, somewhere between the normal and big appearance. He tried to become a great treasure hunter, but just plain sucked. He even failed at stealing Gils from people. Worse, his partner Enkidu gave up Excalibur II in favor of Excalipoor. Very bad memory.
In the end he moved on, not before finding EXCALIBUR in the castle of Alexandria! ... Only to be a fake. Oh well. Placement chosen because next are the two final games, FFXIII and XII, and he possesses Excalibur by then (stated to be the one from FFIX's world)
Weapons:
- Enkidu finds Excalipoor and sends it to Gilgamesh
- Steal Excalibur Copy
Final Fantasy XII / Revenant Wings
Gilgamesh found himself in the world of Ivalice! He may have stolen a sword from a Moogle named Montblanc... Who in return may have petitioned for heroes to go after him... BAH, MOOGLES. By this time, Gilgamesh had acquired lots of swords from countless worlds and fought his opponents bravely! He lost, but became friend with them.
Some times later they met again, and upon loosing once more, became available as a summon. Placement chosen because by this point, Gilgamesh wields swords acquired or seen from all the universes mentioned above.
Weapons:
- Brotherhood (FF10)
- Buster Sword (FF7)
- Orichalcum (FF9)
- Zantestuken
- Tournesol (Excalipoor / Excalibur)
- Wyrmhero
- Masamume
Final Fantasy XIII / XIII-2
Gilgamesh stopped by Cocoon and discovered founded Gilgamesh Inc., a weapon shop selling weapons he crafted himself. All of his weapons proved to have awesome stats, unfortunately they all had some sort of inner defaults making using them terrible. It is assumed he left when Cocoon crashed.
Falling either in the Rift or the Void Beyond, Gilgamesh found himself in the Coliseum. There he fought Serah and Noel and lost quite sadly. Following this, he spent some quality time with Snow Villiers, Ultros, Typhon, PuPu and the Arbiter of Time. Together, they were like the warriors of ancient legends, nothing could stop them!
Erm... It is assumed after this he returned to the rift, as the FFXIII Universe got basically doomed.
FFXII and FFXIII could really be placed the other way around. But as his Zantetsuken here is stated to be the one from Dissidia and modified by the chaos in FFXIII-2, it sounds like having XIII after XII offers a logical explanation for the change of form in Zantetsuken.
Weapons:
- Guns
- Missile Launcher
- Excalibur (FF9)
- Excalipoor
- Zantestuken (fake - Dissidia)
- Masamune (FF6)
- Muramasa (FF10)
- Bashosen (Cocoon)
Discarded Games
Spin-off like the Chocobo games or different games like Blood of Bahamut, etc, features the Final fantasy Gilgamesh, yet they have little in common with the real Gilgamesh, so these games are counted as non canon to this Gilgamesh.
Special Case: Final Fantasy Type-0
Gilgamesh in this game has more story than in any other- He looks like a different characters but many fans claim he is the earliest appearance of Gilgamesh on the timeline. While it makes sense, nothing explains how he could have traveled from this world to FFV before Exdeath banished him to the rift. So not on the continuity for now and considered to be a different Gilgamesh altogether till an official translation of the game is released.
Special Case: Final Fantasy XI
The Gilgamesh of Final fantasy XI is born in this world and has whatsoever nothing in common with the real Gilgamesh, he's most probably not the same characters. Type 0 may be retconning that, but so far I'll keep him as a different characters.
